Katillac Man Wins Iowa Double Gold Futurity

AUGUST 19, 2011
ALTOONA, IA - Katillac Man showed he's learning his racing lessons in Friday's $80,250, Grade 3 Iowa Double Gold Futurity on opening night of Prairie Meadows' quarter horse meet.

The 2-year-old streaked to his third straight victory with a neck victory over Shanachee while equaling the stakes record time of 17.56 seconds for 350 yards.

A son of Country Chicks Man, Katillac Man lost his first three races, but improved with each start and now is riding a three-race winning streak. "He's kind of been a late comer, like his daddy," trainer Frank Cooper said. "He's really gotten better every trip. He's doing real good and I'm real proud of him."

Debbie Freeman has ridden him in all three of his wins. She said when she took the mount, she was told Katillac Man had a habit of breaking inward, but he's overcome that.

"I try to leave him a little tighter rein and he's really broke sharp every time," Freeman said. "I was a little concerned with the one-hole and it being the first time on the rail. You're concerned with the first time on the rail that they'll look at the inside and the glare, but he finished strong as always. He's just enjoying racing. He's happy and likes to do it."

The $32,100 winner's purse pushed the gelding, out of Kitty Kat Dash, by Dash Ta Fame, earnings mare to $44,993. Richard Joneson bred Katillac Man in Oklahoma.

Another Country Chicks Man 2-year-old, Shanachee, finished a head back for second for owner/breeder J. Garvin Kelly. Charley Hunt trains the brown miss ridden by Cody Smith. Out of the Corona Cartel mare Court Etiquette, she picked up $13,642.
